Series of Late Birdies Gives Wooster Fourth-Place Finish at Nye Intercollegiate

A strong finish to Sunday's round allowed The College of Wooster men's golf team to overtake the University of Mount Union for fourth-place at the nine-team Nye Intercollegiate, an annual 36-hole event held this weekend at the Wooster Country Club in Wooster, Ohio.

While Wooster totaled 312 each day on the par-72, 6,545-yard course, it was some strong play late that highlighted the event. Marcus Carano birdied two of the last three holes, Scott Sears also finished with a birdie on the par-four, 410-yard 18th, and Calvin Milligan put together a string of pars over the last four holes, helping the Scots to a 624 total, four strokes ahead of Mount Union (628), which had shot 308 on Saturday.

Wittenberg University, ranked No. 7 nationally in the latest NCAA Div. III coaches' poll, won the event in 595, while the Fighting Scots were within striking distance of second-place DePauw University (611) and third-place Denison University (616). After Mount Union, the remaining four teams were well behind.

Carano's impressive end to the tournament gave him a 75 on the second 18 and tie for 10th-place (154) out of the field of 59 competitors. Overall, he had five birdies and 18 pars.

Sears set the pace for Wooster during the first day with a 74, as he overcame a double bogey on the opening hole and piled up four birdies and nine pars. On Sunday, the sophomore who has shown strong potential recently was more up-and-down during a during an 81 as he tied for 11th.

Jay Selby scored both days. He started the event by going one-under through four holes and wound up with 15 pars total en route to rounds of 82 and 80, good for a tie for 27th-place (162).

Milligan stood out throughout the second 18 as he birdied the second hole and tallied 12 pars during a 76, while Michael Bay contributed to the team score on Saturday as he started out with a one-over 37 on the front nine en route to a 77. Overall, Bay came in a tie for 23rd-place (160) and Milligan tied for 36th (164).

Leading Wooster's individual competitors was Brendan Tully, who equaled Sears's 155 and tied for 13th, doing so with a 75 and an 80.

The Scots will now take part in the North Coast Athletic Conference Golf Championship Series the next two weekends, first playing 36 holes at Apple Valley Golf Course in Howard, Ohio, on April 25-26.
