Carano Under Par as Wooster Finishes Third at Nye Intercollegiate/NCAC Preview

First-year Charlie Holt turned in a 1-under-par 71 on Saturday thanks to sinking a hard-breaking left-to-right putt on the 18th hole.

Behind a career weekend from senior Marcus Carano, The College of Wooster men's golf team finished third at the Nye Intercollegiate/North Coast Athletic Conference Preview held at the Wooster Country Club. The tournament served as a preview for the NCAC Golf Championship Series which the College and the Wooster Country Club will serve as hosts for rounds three and four April 30 and May 1.

The Fighting Scots turned in a 606 for the weekend, one stroke better than 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference runner-up Kenyon College. Six-time defending NCAC champions Wittenberg University led the eight-team contingent at 592, while Allegheny College earned runner-up laurels at 602.

Carano turned in his first sub-par collegiate tournament to earn individual runner-up honors. The senior shot even-par on Saturday, highlighted by a birdie on the 310-yard, par-4 15 to get back to par. On Sunday, Carano turned in a 1-under-par 71 to finish at 143. Highlighting Sunday's round were a 35 on the front-nine and a birdie on the par-4, 293-yard 17th hole.

Allegheny's Jimmy Lasher finished two strokes ahead of Carano at 3-under-par to earn individual medalist accolades.

Charlie Holt posted a top-five finish on the weekend, with a 4-over-par 148. The first-year had a wild round on Saturday, beating the course with a 1-under-par 71. Holt, who was 3-over through five holes, birdied the par-4, 305-yard sixth hole, before doing one better with a tap-in for eagle on the par-5, 534-yard seventh to get back to par. Holt would birdie the ninth hole to finish at 1-under on the front nine. To cap Saturday's round, Holt sank a hard left-to-right putt on the 18th. He would card a 77 on Sunday.

Calvin Milligan had the biggest improvement for the Scots between rounds. The senior followed his 79 on Saturday with a six-stroke improvement on Sunday to finish at 152 and tie for 11th. The senior pared the last three holes to turn in a 36 on the back nine.

First-years Andrew DeLaat and Raghu Bir Choudhary rounded out the lineup for the Scots. DeLaat finished at 164 to tie for 41st after scores of 78 and 86. The weekend saw DeLaat birdie the first two holes on Saturday. Bir Choudhary  fired back-to-back 85s to tie for 49th.

Highlights from Wooster's six individual competitors, included a 2-under-par 34 by Patrick Brouse on the front nine on Sunday.

Wooster will welcome back Scott Sears in the spring, who is currently studying abroad.
