The College of Wooster men's golf team ended the two-day Dan Quayle Collegiate Classic at Deer Creek Golf Club in Clayton, Ind., on Sunday afternoon tied for eighth-place among the 13-team field which included four additional collegiate "B" teams.
Collectively, the Fighting Scots opened Round 1 of the 6,695-yard, par-71 course with a 303 and followed up Saturday's round with a near-identical 304.
Sophomore Evan Ferrara placed third overall with opening-round 72 and an even-par 71 on Sunday to finish just two shots back of medalist Mikel Merker from Mt. St. Joseph University. The result marked Ferrara's second top-20 finish of the season and first top-five claim.
Behind Ferrara, first-year Colin O'Hern put in a consistent performance with back-to-back 74s for 12th-place overall, followed by junior Andrew DeLaat's two-round 157. DeLaat, a junior out of Medina, Ohio, posted an opening-round 75, the fifth best score of any Scot on the weekend – before closing out with an 82 on Sunday.
Rounding out Wooster's top-five were first-year David Roney and senior Brenden Tully. Roney hit a first-round 82 and improved by two strokes to close the tournament at 162. Tully opened with a 92 on Saturday and bounced back with a closing-round 79.
Kenyon College won with a two-day score of 587 (296-291), followed by DePauw University (303-293) and Franklin College (297-299), who tied for runner-up honors at 596.
Additionally, a group of Scot golfers competed in the Individual Pool at the Mount Union Fall Invitational at Tannenhauf Golf Club in Alliance, Ohio as part of a non-scoring competitive showing at the two-round event. Junior Raghu Bir Choudhary finished fifth overall with consecutive three-over 75s on the par-72 golf course. Sophomore Evan Jenkins (82-72-154) and junior Ric Reynolds (79-77-156) posted top-25 finishes, claiming a tie for 16th- and 24th-place, respectively.
Not far behind were sophomore Jimmy Hinton (80-77-157) and classmate Mac Bellovich (84-77-161).
Up next, Wooster heads back west for the Earlham Fall Invitational on Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at the Forest Hills Country Club in Richmond, Ind.
