Mary Washington Deals Wooster 12-6 Setback

Scoring opportunities were sparse for The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team in the early goings Saturday, as the Fighting Scots generated just one goal on seven first half shots, and the University of Mary Washington steadily pulled away, turning a 5-1 advantage at the break into a 12-6 triumph at Fredericksburg, Va.

The Scots (2-2) and Eagles (3-3) looked primed to have a closely contested battle in the opening quarter, as Matt Pullara responded to an early Mary Washington goal with a score on an Alex Mies assist that tied the game 1-1 just 8:25 into the action. The Eagles snuck in a second goal with just 20 seconds to play in the stanza, giving them a 2-1 lead that they quickly expanded on.

Mary Washington outshot Wooster 12-4 and added three more goals in the second quarter, while holding the Scots scoreless, giving it a 5-1 cushion at halftime. That lead increased to 7-1 in the third before Pat Coyne beat the keeper on an unassisted goal that drew Wooster within five.

The Scots' came alive in the fourth quarter, as Dan MacVarish scored twice, and Mies and Joe Suliman each recorded goals, but Mary Washington put three more points on the board in the process, halting any possible Wooster comeback attempt.

For MacVarish, it was his third-consecutive game scoring two goals, while Coyne, Suliman, and Mies all tallied both a goal and an assist. Goalkeeper Corey McGann recorded nine saves in the setback.

The Scots will visit NCAA Div. III powerhouse Salisbury University (6-0) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
