WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster opened its 2010 men's lacrosse campaign with a bit of a historic win, as the Fighting Scots routed Milwaukee School of Engineering 22-0, notching a shutout for just the fourth time in program history and their first since March 30, 2002.

It also marked the team's Sprinturf debut, with the new synthetic surface having been installed last summer at John P. Papp Stadium to replace the natural grass, and thus allowing Monday's game to be played with piles of snow surrounding the field.

Wooster (1-0) scored 10 times in the first quarter alone, highlighted by three goals over a 1:23 stretch that saw Alex Mies find the back of the net once and then assist on back-to-back tallies. The Scots added three in the second for a 13-0 halftime cushion and the storyline quickly became whether the defense would be able to complete the shutout.

A 4-0 third quarter and four more goals for Wooster early in the fourth ensued before MSOE (0-1) did have a series of quality looks. Scot goalie Corey McGann came up with a save, one of his three on the game, on one of the Raiders' attempts and they never threatened again.

Wooster's last shutout came against OberlinOberlin College eight years ago (20-0), while the 22 goals marked the most for the Scots since the 2008 season opener versus Hendrix College (22-1).

Eleven different Scot players scored goals, paced by Casey McGann and Mies with four apiece and Jeff Noel with three. For McGann and Noel, both sophomores, it marked the first hat tricks of their careers, while Mies added five assists for a nine-point outing, one better than the senior's previous career high.

MSOE is a first-year program and was making its varsity debut.

Wooster will host Birmingham-Southern College (0-2) this Saturday at noon.
