Three Wooster Hat Tricks Fuel Double-Digit Win Over St. Vincent

WOOSTER, Ohio – Behind a potent scoring attack that saw three players record hat tricks, and a relentless effort on defense, The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team built an early lead over St. Vincent College and cruised to a 16-6 win on Wednesday night at John P. Papp Stadium.

The Scots (3-4) looked determined to put points on the scoreboard in the opening stanza, outshooting the Bearcats (1-4) by a 13-5 margin, including a goal by Pat Coyne in the game's third minute that gave Wooster a lead it never relinquished. Coyne recorded a hat trick just over 12 minutes into the contest, and the Scots led 5-2 heading into the second quarter.

St. Vincent got a quick goal to start the second that drew them within two scores (3-5), but that was as close as Wooster allowed them to get. Eric Johnson later scored during a man-up situation on a Casey McGann assist, and then McGann added two goals of his own, giving the Scots an 8-3 cushion and the momentum at the break.

Alex Mies achieved his hat trick in the third quarter, and later added two more scores, while McGann turned his trick with a man-down goal on a Mies assist with 13:16 remaining in the action. Johnson sent a blistering shot from 20 yards out into the net late in the game that put an exclamation point on an impressive outing.

Mies paced the Scots with seven points (5 goals, 2 assists), while Coyne (4 goals, 1 assist) and McGann (3 goals, 1 assist) did there part in sparking the attack. Goalkeeper Corey McGann was also effective, making eight saves while allowing only one goal in each of the final three quarters.

The Scots will play their second North Coast Athletic Conference game of the season this Saturday when No. 7 DenisonDenison University (4-0) visits John P. Papp Stadium.
