MacVarish’s Five Goals Key Scots’ 12-6 Triumph Over Kenyon

<a href= Behind Dan MacVarish's scoring outburst, and Corey McGann's nine-save outing in goal, The College of Wooster gradually pulled away to upend KenyonKenyon College 12-6 on Saturday in a North Coast Athletic Conference tilt, and both team's regular season finale, at an overcast Gambier, Ohio.

The Scots (9-7, 3-2 NCAC), who notched their best record in NCAC action since 2005, trailed 1-0 early until MacVarish scored on an Alex Mies assist that sparked a quick four-goal run. Joe Suliman recorded a goal 33 seconds later, and MacVarish added two more to complete a hat trick and give Wooster a 4-1 lead.

During a stretch in the second and third quarters that spanned 12:40, the Scots produced a 6-0 scoring run that gave them a 10-2 cushion. Suliman and MacVarish got back in on the scoring action, and Casey McGann, Mies, and Matt Pullara added the rest, with the latter delivering the last two goals in the run.

The Lords (6-8, 1-4 NCAC) scored a pair of goals during a quiet fourth quarter, which saw Wooster attempt just seven shots, but the damage was insurmountable at that point. Goalkeeper McGann made nine saves in the win, and Pullara, Pat Coyne, and Graham Zimmerman combined to scoop 12 groundballs in a solid effort.

MacVarish led the Scots in scoring with a career-high five goals, while Pullara added his own hat trick, and Suliman tacked on two scores and an assist. Alex Mies tied a career-best with five assists to finish the season ranked first in the NCAC (38 assists) in the category. His assist total is the fifth-highest in program history, and the most by a Scot since 1991 (Steve Davidow, 34).
