Wooster Blitzed Early, Falls 17-6 to St. Mary's

Following convincing back-to-back wins at home to open the season, The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team encountered some resistance on the road, as St. Mary's College of Maryland got out to 6-0 lead and went on to drop the Fighting Scots 17-6 on Wednesday at St. Mary's City, Md.

The opening quarter was all St. Mary's, as the Seahawks (2-2) outshot the Scots (2-1) 13-4, and connected on six unanswered goals, with four coming from attackman Dennis Rosson. Wooster turned the tide on St. Mary's in the second stanza, as Joe Suliman scored a man-up goal right out the gates, and then delivered another score minutes later on a Matt Pullara assist to bring the Scots within four (2-6).

Casey McGann scored the third Wooster goal on a dish from Alex Mies with 6:14 remaining until the break, and the Scots outshot St. Mary's 10-4 in the quarter, but the Seahawks led 8-3 at halftime.

Wooster only attempted nine more shots over the final 30 minutes of action, and St. Mary's added seven more goals in the third to take a 15-4 lead and seal the game. Dan MacVarish scored two goals in the second half, and Casey McGann added his second score on an assist from Pay Coyne in the game's final minutes.

McGann led the Scots with two goals and an assist, and Mies added two assists to bring his season total to 11 in three games. Goalkeeper Corey McGann was bombarded with 39 shots, and tallied seven saves in the setback.

The Scots will look to get back in the win column this Saturday when they visit the University of Mary Washington (2-3) at 1 p.m.
