WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team scored seven goals in the third quarter and cruised past Trine University 17-7 on Tuesday evening under the lights at John P. Papp Stadium

The Scots (7-3) and Thunder (6-5) were knotted up at 1-1 late in the first quarter, but Tom Herold rifled in two goals just 13 seconds apart to put Wooster up 3-1 at the end of the stanza.

Herold finished off a hat trick 1:45 into the second quarter, and then the Scots began to roll, as Matt Ranck scored twice, and PJ Dallman added another, capping off a 6-0 scoring run that had Wooster in front by a comfortable 7-1 margin midway through the period.

The third quarter was when the Scots put the game away, as they outscored Trine 7-3, which included goals from young midfielders Nate Weltman and Mike Ewanechko, to build an insurmountable 16-5 cushion.

Newcomer Trevor Shoemaker scored the Scots' final goal of the contest, giving them eight different goal scorers in all.

Ranck paced Wooster with six points (5 goals, 1 assist), while Herold added four points coming on four goals.

Wooster lost the face-off battle for just the third time all season by a narrow 13-12 margin, though specialist Max Rubin went 9-for-18 on his attempts. Andrew Holmes and Sean Hohan tied for the team-lead with three caused turnovers apiece, while Dallman, Holmes, Dean Marchitelli, and Rubin each scooped up five groundballs.

All three Wooster goalkeepers saw playing time, with starter Matt Magoon leading the way with six saves, while Ben Grombala had five saves.

Next, the Scots look to run their winning streak to five games when they visit Hiram College (1-7, 1-2 NCAC) tomorrow at 7 p.m.
