Wooster Puts On Commanding Performance in 2014 Opener

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster was in control throughout its 2014 season opener, outscoring the University of Mount Union each quarter of a 10-3 win on Thursday at Andrew Turf Field at John P. Papp Stadium.

While Wooster (1-0) held a 36-17 advantage in the shot department through three quarters, Mount Union (0-1) was still hanging around, down 7-2. Then, a Josh Herold-to-Evan Albertson score kick-started a three-goal explosion for the Fighting Scots during a 2:39 stretch early in the fourth. After Albertson's goal, Max Rubin won the ensuing face-off, sprinted down field and passed to Tom Herold, who quickly found Pat McKay on the left and McKay beat the 'keeper low with just eight seconds elapsing.

A couple of minutes later, Wooster owned a two-man advantage due to a pair of Mount Union penalties and the Scots converted the opportunity when Tom Herold fed Jake Bernard, who had room to take a couple steps toward the cage before firing the ball in for a 10-2 cushion with 9:11 remaining.

Bernard also scored the first goal of the game, leading to a 3-0 first quarter for Wooster.

The Purple Raiders' best stretch was the second with tallies 2:47 into the quarter and with 3:01 left. Sandwiched in between, though, were three Scot goals as they took a 6-2 advantage into halftime.

Pat Henderson accounted for the lone score of the third quarter.

Overall, Tom Herold paced Wooster's attack as the junior was part of five of the 10 scores. He netted three goals himself and passed out two others, while Bernard, Henderson, and McKay, a freshman making his collegiate debut, finished with two goals apiece.

Also making valuable contributions were Rubin, who won 11-of-13 face-offs, Dean Marchitelli, who recorded three caused turnovers and four groundballs, and Matt Magoon, who tallied three saves before being pulled midway through the fourth quarter.

The Scots will host first-year program John Carroll University (1-0) next Wednesday at 4 p.m.
