The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team built an 11-2 lead at the halftime break, which included a career-high five goals from Tom Herold, as the Fighting Scots cruised to a 16-2 victory over Trine University on Wednesday afternoon in a neutral site contest at Defiance, Ohio.
The Scots (6-0) have been playing at a high level during their six-game win streak – the program's longest such streak to start a season since the 1991 team went 6-0 – but this victory was their most dominant effort yet.
Wooster jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first quarter and pushed it to 6-0 with a goal at the onset of the second. Moments later, Trine snapped its scoreless skid to pull within 6-1, but then the Scots erupted to the tune of five goals in just over four minutes of action to build an insurmountable 10-goal advantage (11-1).
The Herold brothers did more than their share during the run, as Tom Herold (5 goals, 1 assist) and Josh Herold (2 goals, 4 assists) had a hand in 10 of the 11 first-half goals.
Wooster took its foot off the gas in the second half, although three players achieved milestones in their young careers, as Jack Crawley, Mike Pappalardo, and Matt Parmelee each netted their first career goals in the fourth quarter.
The defense held an opponent to three or fewer goals for the third time in six games, with Sean Hohan (3 groundballs, 2 caused turnovers), Parmelee (3 groundballs, 2 caused turnovers), and Dean Marchitelli (2 groundballs, 3 caused turnovers) standing out on the stat sheet.
The Scots used three goalkeepers to combine on the win. Aaron Levy saw the most extensive playing time with 37:55 and a team-high five saves.
Next up, Wooster looks to make it seven straight when it hosts Albion College (5-2) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
