The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team scored three unanswered goals the last five minutes of the first quarter and maintained at least a two-goal advantage the rest of the way during its eventual 16-10 victory at Center College Wednesday afternoon in Danville, Ky.

Through 10 minutes of action the teams were deadlocked at two, then Wooster (3-1) grabbed the momentum as midfielder Evan Albertson caused a turnover plus gained credit for a groundball on the defensive end and scored a go-ahead, unassisted goal on the other half of the field.

Less than a minute later, Tom Herold fed Pat Henderson for a score, and near the end of the opening quarter, junior long-stick midfielder Dan Gorzynski netted the first goal of his career for a 5-2 Fighting Scots' advantage.

A high-scoring second period followed, with each offense producing four tallies. Centre (2-3) closed within two three times, another Herold-to-Henderson combination and a PJ Dallman goal put Wooster up 9-5 before the Colonels connected right before halftime.

Centre also had the initial score of the third quarter to make it 9-7, then the Scots appeared that they were going to pull away as Albertson and Josh Herold fired in back-to-back goals. But by the end of the third, the Colonels had made it a two-goal margin again (11-9).

After the score was 12-10 – the eight time Wooster led by two on the day – early in the fourth quarter, the Scots put the game away for good. Tom Herold and Pat McKay scored exactly a minute apart for a four-goal cushion with 8:04 to play, and they each went on to tack on insurance goals for the final margin.

Tom Herold totaled six points on an evenly distributed three goals and three assists, and Albertson also registered a hat trick, marking the third three-goal game of the senior's career.

Henderson, Sam Kuhn, and McKay scored two goals apiece, while Josh Herold matched his brother with three assists, and another key factor in the win was Max Rubin, who won 14-of-24 face-offs.

Wooster will begin North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday when it hosts Wabash College (1-2, 0-0 NCAC) at 1 p.m.
