Six-Goal Run in Second Half Lifts Wooster to 14-10 Win Over Albion in Opener

The College of Wooster broke an 8-8 tie early in the second half with an extended stretch of unanswered goals, as it scored the last three of the third quarter and the first three of the fourth to pull away from Albion College, and the Fighting Scots eventually secured a 14-10 victory in the season debut for both teams, played inside Saturday evening at Detroit Country Day School in Beverly Hills, Mich.

After Albion knotted the score at eight less than two minutes into the third, Wooster went right back ahead on a CJ Polak unassisted goal. Midway through the quarter, Nate Weltman pumped one into the back of the net, and late in the quarter, Sam Kuhn made good on an extra-man opportunity, converting a pass from Ian Brim to put the Scots ahead 11-8 – the largest lead for either squad to that point.

Only 20 seconds into the final quarter, Wooster took advantage of another penalty on the Britons, with Kuhn notching another man-up goal, this time assisted by Matt Parmelee. Brim tacked on a couple more goals, as the Scots were suddenly up 14-8 with 8:29 remaining.

Wooster closed out the win, yielding just a couple of goals the last 3:02.

Albion got the best of the Scots during the first quarter, taking a 4-2 advantage, then Parmelee connected twice early in the second to tie it. After falling behind by two again (6-4), Weltman scored a pair 40 seconds apart to even the scoreboard again.

Eventually, it was 7-7 at the halftime break, followed by Wooster's explosive second half.

Brim finished with a three-goal, four-assist performance, while Parmelee was equally effective with four goals and two assists. Kuhn and Weltman each recorded a hat trick.

Defensively, Aaron Levy, who lost last season to an injury, made nine saves while going the distance in goal, and the Scots successfully cleared the ball 16-of-17 times.

Also of note, Wooster was especially effective during extra-man opportunities, going 4-for-5.

The Scots will play again next Saturday, as they are scheduled to host John Carroll University (1-1) at 1 p.m.
