 Josh Herold

Junior Matt Parmelee and The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team needed just 33 seconds in overtime to bury the game-winner in a 13-12 thriller over Swarthmore College on Tuesday afternoon at Swarthmore, Pa.

The Fighting Scots (4-2) had the extra stanza's only possession with Brooks Kiley and Jack Gilio teaming up at the onset for a crucial face-off win. Parmelee came through seconds later on the offensive end with his team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Wooster nearly won in regulation, but a late goal with nine ticks left from Swarthmore (3-2) tied the contest back up at 12.

The Garnet's game-tying goal followed a key man-up tally from CJ Polak that was assisted on by Josh Herold with just under a minute left in regulation.

Wooster really started clicking offensively early in the third period with a four-goal onslaught in a span of 1:59. Ian Brim played a big role during the stretch finding the back of the net twice, first at the 12:18 mark on an extra-man opportunity, and again with 10:19 remaining in the period, pushing the Scots' lead to 8-4. Sam Kuhn and Herold also fired goals past the Swarthmore goalkeeper during the offensive frenzy.

Herold pushed Wooster's lead back to four (10-6) at the end of the third period with a pair of goals over a 47-second span. Both tallies came off assists from Alexander Bloom.

Swarthmore made its big offensive push in the fourth period, rattling off four unanswered goals over the first seven minutes and change of the stanza, including three-straight off the hot stick of Nathan Relich, who went on to score a team-high five goals.

Bloom ended the Swarthmore charge with his first goal of the season with 4:43 remaining in regulation. The tally put Wooster up 11-10 at the time.

Herold led the Scots' offense on the afternoon with five goals to couple with five groundballs and an assist. Brim, Kuhn, and Polak all added two-goal outings, while Gilio led the defensive unit with game highs in groundballs (9) and caused turnovers (3).

Wooster outshot Swarthmore 40-33, and also finished with five more groundballs (34-29) than the Garnet. Of note, the Scots took exceptional care of the ball, only turning it over 13 times, marking the second-fewest giveaways of the season.

Next, Wooster opens North Coast Athletic Conference play with a 1 p.m. tilt on Saturday against Wabash College (3-3, 0-0 NCAC) at Crawfordsville, Ind.
