Lords' Fast Start Pushes Kenyon Past Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio - Aaron Levy turned aside 21 shots, including several at point-blank range, but a consistent, methodical attack coupled by a stifling defense propelled the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team past The College of Wooster 18-8 on Tuesday evening at John P. Papp Stadium.

Levy, the first Wooster (8-4, 3-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) goalkeeper to record at least 20 saves in a game since Matt Magoon had 20 at Denison University on March 23, 2013, really stepped up in the third period when he stopped six of Keyon's (8-2, 3-1 NCAC) nine on-goal shots.

Jack Gilio recorded five groundballs in the game, and upped his team lead to 55.

However, the offenses dominated the early portion of the game with both teams combining to score 11 of the 26 goals in the first period.

Kenyon struck first when Chris Ferraro beat Levy with 11:59 remaining in the first period.

Wooster answered right back with CJ Polak setting up Ian Brim, prior to Matt Parmelee finding Pat McKay, which actually gave the Fighting Scots a brief 2-1 advantage with 8:48 left in the opening stanza.

The lead did not hold for long as the Lords tied the came up with 8:24 remaining, prior to pumping in four more over the next 3:35.

Wooster made it a two-goal affair late in the frame when Nate Goodin and Brim connected.

Sam Kuhn snuck his team-leading 20th goal of the season across the line with 13:50 remaining in the second period. The dribbler, which at the time made the score 7-5, hit off of the Kenyon goalie and just trickled across the line.

Kenyon, who racked up 55 shots on the night, closed out the half on a 6-1 run, with Jack Gilio's second goal of the year the only blemish on the Lords' defensive side of things.

The pace really slowed in the second half, but Wooster was able to capitalize on a big Kenyon miscue.

Long-stick midfielder Dan Gorzynski pried the ball away from Kenyon's 'keeper who was trying to push the ball downfield, just past the midway point of the third period. McKay scooped up the ensuing groundball and pumped a long-range strike into the wide-open net.

Kenyon closed out the contest with a 3-0 run.

The Lords recorded 53 groundballs on the night, aided in large part by winning 23-of-29 faceoffs.

Wooster, who had 37 groundballs and 15 caused turnovers on the night, was paced by Ethan Scully who had six and three respectively. Gorzynski continued to play well following up a six-groundball, two-caused turnover outing with a five-groundball, three-caused turnover night on Tuesday.

Kenyon's Chris Ferraro pumped in a game-high five goals, while faceoff specialist Will Swain scooped up 16 groundballs.

Next, Wooster hosts DePauw University (3-6, 0-2 NCAC) in a 1 p.m. tilt on Saturday.
