Scots Ramp-Up Offensive Intensity in Second Half in 14-8 Win Over DePauw

WOOSTER, Ohio - A seven-goal third-period outburst propelled The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team to a 14-8 North Coast Athletic Conference win over DePauw University on "Senior Day" on Sunday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (9-4, 4-1 NCAC) really took charge about five minutes into the second half when senior Nate Weltman pumped in a goal with 10:03 remaining in the third period that sparked an 8-0 run.

The run, which ultimately saw the Fighting Scots pull ahead 13-7 with 8:42 left in the contest, really heated up with four minutes left in the third stanza. During a 40-second stretch, the Scots rattled off three goals.

First, CJ Polak set up Sam Kuhn, a tally that put Wooster ahead for good at 8-7. Next, Jack Gilio scooped up the groundball on the ensuing faceoff and scored his third goal in as many games. Finally, Matt Parmelee set up Alexander Bloom for a quick strike moments after a Wooster shot attempt sailed wide of the cage with 3:20 left in the period.

Wooster also had key contributions in the scoring column from Parmelee (2), Gilio and Josh Herold during the 8-0 run.

Notable, Herold added an assist on Ian Brim's goal with 4:23 remaining in the contest, marked the junior's 51st point of the year. The point haul is the most since Matt Ranck tallied 52 points on 45 goals and seven assists during the 2012 campaign.

Earlier in the contest, Bloom staked Wooster to a 2-0 lead just over three minutes into the afternoon conference tilt.

The Tigers (4-7, 1-3 NCAC) pounced right back scoring the next three goals prior to Weltman tying the contest at three with six ticks left in the first period.

DePauw added a second 3-0 clip in the second frame, including Nick Woerner's tally with under a second remaining on the clock to take a 6-4 halftime lead.

Offensively, hat tricks were turned in by Bloom and Herold on the afternoon for Wooster.

Of note, Wooster dominated in the faceoff department with Erik Barroso winning 20-of-25 attempts on the afternoon, while the sophomore went on to scoop up nine groundballs.

For the game, Wooster finished with a 56-34 groundball advantage.

Individually, Gilio finished with eight groundballs to his credit to bump his season total up to 63, a mark tied with Dan Maurer for the fourth-most in program history dating back to 1999 when groundballs became a tracked statistic.

Other defensive standouts included Dan Gorzynski with five caused turnovers and five groundballs and Aaron Levy with 10 saves.

Levy's counterpart Connor Patterson turned aside 12 shots for the Tigers.

Next, Wooster closes out the home portion of its regular-season schedule with a 7 p.m. clash on Wednesday against fifth-ranked Denison University (10-1, 4-0 NCAC).
