Britons’ Quick Start Trips Up Scots in Season Opener

Josh Herold

The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team opened the 2017 season on the road against Albion College, as the Fighting Scots fell, 13-11, on Saturday afternoon at the Detroit County Day School in Beverly Hills, Mich.

Albion (1-0) struck first when David DiRado tallied an unassisted man-up goal just under two minutes in. Wooster junior Sam Kuhn responded with an unassisted tally of his own, leveling the game nearly four minutes later. Albion scored four of the next five goals – including three straight in a span of 2:40 – with Kuhn notching a second off the assist from senior Josh Herold as the Scots went into the first break down, 5-2.

In the second, Herold turned from facilitator to scorer with two straight unassisted goals coming just 30 seconds apart, while senior C.J. Polak and first-year Luke Lijenstolpe both tacked on individual efforts to cut the deficit to 9-7 at the half.

The Scots (0-1) pulled back to within one 24 ticks into the third quarter, as Herold scored his third and final of the game off the assist from classmate Matt Parmelee to make it a 9-8 Albion lead.

Two Briton goals – one from Brandon Lebioda and Dominic Hamper – stretched the lead back to three with 3:03 left in the third. Wooster junior Nathaniel Miller responded just over a minute later after converting on the dish from Polak.

Entering the fourth down 11-9, Lebioda stretched the lead back to three 2:12 into the quarter, but two straight tallies from Miller – one off the assist from Parmelee and the other from Polak – brought the Scots back to within one at the 5:39 mark.

With 1:11 remaining, Albion's John Cooke added an insurance goal with a solo effort to push the lead to two, as the Britons would hold on to claim the 13-11 victory.

The Scots return to action against John Carroll University on Saturday, Feb. 25 at noon.
