Steady Scoring Guides McDaniel to 11-8 Win Over Wooster

Ian Brim

Two early goals from senior Josh Herold saw The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team take an early lead at a snow-laden facility in Westminster, Md., but a consistent offensive threat from McDaniel College stifled the Fighting Scots' prowess later on as the Green Terror came away with an 11-8 win on Wednesday afternoon.

Herold put Wooster (2-4) up four minutes in off the assist from junior Ian Brim. Just over three minutes later, the senior attacker doubled the Scots' advantage with a long-range attempt that saw its way trickle in.

McDaniel (5-2) responded with four goals in the quarter's final five minutes before tacking on a fifth straight tally 34 ticks into the second.

Goals from Jared Payne with 3:00 and 1:48 left in the first were bookended by tallies from Troy Becker before the Green Terror's Timothy McNichol brought the lead to three (5-2) just after the start of the second stanza.

That would be the only goal of the period for McDaniel, as Wooster managed to post a 2-1 scoreline in the second and wither the deficit to one (4-5) heading into the half.

In closing out the second quarter on a strong note, Brim ripped a far-post shot from close range for the Scots' third goal after nearly 10 scoreless minutes from either side. Just over a minute later, junior Alexander Bloom posted the squad's final goal of the period with a side-angle shot from 10 yards out after a deft cutback move.

McDaniel made its mark in the third and ultimately pulled away with a 4-1 goal advantage in the quarter, highlighted by two late tallies just 13 seconds apart at the quarter's end.

The Green Terror, which outshot Wooster 16-4 in the quarter, had four different players score in the quarter, with pairs coming on each end of sophomore Ethan Scully's unassisted goal with 1:51 remaining in the period.

In the fourth, Brim opened and closed the quarter's scoring for the Scots en route to his first hat trick of the year.

The junior's second goal of the game brought the Scots to within three (6-9) with a top-shelf goal from 15 yards out with 12:35 remaining, but tallies from Becker and McNichol put McDaniel back up by five as the Green Terror was able to hold off a late-quarter comeback attempt, with Bloom notching his second of the game before Brim's third and final goal with under :41 remaining.

First-year 'keeper Wesley Wagner put in a full 60 minutes between the pipes, logging seven saves on the day. The Scots posted 32 total shots, including 15 in the fourth quarter. Junior Jack Gilio picked up a team-high four groundballs as part of 21 total, while Brim followed with three of his own. Gilio also came away with two caused turnovers.

Proving crucial for McDaniel was the possession battle, as the Green Terror were 18-for-23 on faceoffs and picked up 40 total groundballs.

Up next, the Scots play host to Wabash College (3-2) on Saturday, March 18 at 1 p.m.
