Wooster Rolls Past Washington & Jefferson 24-7

WOOSTER, Ohio - Sixteen members of The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team recorded a point, while 22 tallied a groundball, as the Fighting Scots were firing on all cylinders during a 24-7 win over visiting Washington and Jefferson College on Monday evening at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (4-4), applied its signature pressure all night and that yielded in 88 shot attempts for the Scots, and the Black & Gold recorded at least 20 in each period. Defensively, the Scots took full advantage of 35 Washington & Jefferson (2-5) turnovers, 20 of which were caused, marking a season-high by Wooster in that department. In the groundball department, Wooster scooped up a season-high 64, marking the most the Scots have had in a game since also have 64 against Hiram College on March 21, 2015.

The Scots jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the first period was halfway over, and in fact, needed just 53 ticks to score the opening goal that game that came via the stick of senior Matt Parmelee. Notable, Wooster's depth was on full display as five different Scots – junior Ian Brim, seniors Sam Kuhn and Josh Herold, first-year Luke Liljenstolpe, and junior Aidan Crowe – followed suit during the game-opening flurry. In fact, the Scots didn't have an individual score for a second time until Parmelee set up Crowe with 11:16 to go in the first half that made it 9-2.

Later in the game, Wooster went on a 9-0 run with Liljenstolpe leading the relentless storm with three of his game-high five goals. Junior Alexander Bloom backed that up with a pair of goals.

Offensively, Liljenstolpe added two assists with his five goals for a game-high seven points while Parmelee dished out a game-best three assists as part of a five-point night. In the goal column, Crowe and senior Josh Herold each finished with a hat trick, with Herold adding an assist as part of a four-point performance.

Notable, Wooster really ramped up the defensive pressure in the second period as Washington & Jefferson turned it over 11 times and went 3-for-11 on clear attempts. For the game, the Scots held the Presidents to below 50-percent in the clearing department (17-for-36), while Wooster only had two failed clears in 18 tries.

All nine of Wooster's field position starters recorded a groundball and seven of them checked in with a caused turnover. Senior CJ Polak led the intense pressure early with seven groundballs and five caused turnovers, three of which came during the second period.

Crowe led the Scots on the night with eight groundballs while first-year Cullen Kuhn joined Polak with seven.

Other notable statistical performances included junior Jack Gilio's five groundballs, moving him into fourth all-time in program history with 159, first-year Rob Hunt's 11-for-14 night in the face-off-x, four caused turnovers by first-year Noah Plotkin, and 10 saves by first-year Wesley Wagner.

Washington & Jefferson 'keeper Noah Cohen put forth a valiant effort in net, turning aside 33 shots, the second most in a Div. III game this season.

Next, Wooster travels to Alma College (5-2) for a 6 p.m. tilt on Wednesday.
