Wooster’s Season Comes to an End with NCAC Tournament Semifinal Loss to No. 8 Denison

Josh Herold

The College of Wooster men's lacrosse season came to a close on Wednesday evening as the Fighting Scots fell 21-3 to No. 8 Denison University in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals at Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.

For the second consecutive season, Wooster (9-9, 5-3 NCAC) lost to the Big Red (14-1, 8-0 NCAC) in the semifinal round of the conference tournament. On Wednesday, the Scots held Denison scoreless through the opening six minutes before the Big Red tacked on four quick tallies within a two-minute span.

With 2:02 remaining in the first period, junior Sam Kuhn found the back of the cage off the assist from senior Josh Herold to make it a 4-1 game heading into the second period.

From there, Denison piled on a 6-0 run before a Kuhn-to-Herold connection surfaced once again, with this time Herold recording the goal as Kuhn scooped up a heavily contested groundball before finding Herold just north of the crease for the finish.

The Big Red outscored the Scots 6-0 in the third period as part of a 10-0 second half run. Herold added one final goal to his impressive career total with 1:07 left in the game, as first-year Luke Liljenstolpe provided the helper.

Herold, first-year Wesley Wagner, and juniors Erik Barroso and Jack Gilio each recorded three groundballs while sophomore Ethan Scully posted two caused turnovers. Barroso and Gilio ended the season with 77 and 71 groundballs, respectively, both marking top five season totals in program history.

With two goals and an assist, Herold moved into seventh-place all-time in program history with 97 career goals. In addition, the senior ended his career with the third-most assists in program history with 98 while finishing in the top five in points with 195.
