Scots Move to 3-0 as Fisher Breaks Career Groundball Record

Senior Jimmy Fisher broke the program career record for groundballs as The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team moved to 3-0 with a 17-10 win over Westminster College on Wednesday.

Fisher collected a game-and season-high 12 groundballs to reach 295 in her career. Entering the season with 271, he surpassed the 293 set by Matt Pullara back in 2011.

What led him to that number tonight was going 19 of 29 in faceoffs as the team totaled 50 groundballs in the game.

Against the elements of the weather that included a stint of snow and constant high winds, the Scots got up early and never looked back. They scored the first three goals as Vinny DiLeoLane Kellogg and Henry McMahon each got on the board.

However, Westminster (1-1) took advantage of an illegal equipment penalty that resulted in two man-up goals from Jimmy Sentz.

Wooster got back on track when that penalty went away, turning a 4-3 lead to a 7-3 lead with another three unanswered goals – this time from Austin Jourde, Shane Epstein-Petrullo and DiLeo.

Wooster led 7-4 after one and a 3-0 second quarter gave them a 10-4 lead at halftime.

Westminster inched closer in the third when they scored three goals unanswered twice. They won the quarter 6-3 and found themselves down just three at 13-10.

Yet, Wooster clamped down with another clean quarter, taking the fourth 4-0. The Scots got four different scorers in the quarter as well between Ben ByarsCooper NicholsWill Fink and Jourde.

Kellogg, DiLeo aand Byars each had three goals to lead the Scots. Jourde added two as Wooster's other multi-goal scorer.

Jourde and DiLeo also led the team with three assists each.

Senior Casey Steffen finished with seven caused turnovers and four groundballs. Bill Holtzer added four caused turnovers and three groundballs, and McMahon added four groundballs.

Paul Chandler played the entire 60 minutes in goal, making nine saves and collecting his third win of the year.

Wooster converted 18 of 22 clear attempts, while limiting Westminster to a success rate of 16 of 34. The Scots also outshot Westminster 57-27.

The Scots will look to keep its unbeaten streak alive when they travel to Johon Carroll University on Saturday.
