Opposing Goalkeeping Denies Wooster Win in Virginia

Ben Byars, Wooster Lacrosse VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia – Senior Casey Steffen caused six turnovers in The College of Wooster men's lacrosse team's spring break opener, but superb goalkeeping by Ithaca College's (New York) Cole Corrigan enabled the Bombers to take an 8-7 game from the Fighting Scots in Virginia Beach on Wednesday.

Steffen, Wooster's (5-2) All-American defender, logged a fourth game this spring with at least five caused turnovers. He now has 32, which rates as the fifth-most in single-season history since caused turnovers became a NCAA-tracked statistic in 2010.

As a team, Wooster caused 16 turnovers. Ten Scots had at least one, including first-year John Allen Ginder, who had two. However, thanks to Corrigan's 18 saves, Wooster was not able to capitalize on a 37-26 shot advantage.

Sophomore Lane Kellogg scored three of Wooster's seven goals and added three groundballs to his stat line. Other offensive leaders included seniors Ben Byars and Vinny DiLeo, who combined to score Wooster's other four goals. Senior Jimmy Fisher won 8-of-13 faceoffs. DiLeo, Fisher, and senior Henry McMahon logged four groundballs each. Senior Paul Chandler turned aside eight Bomber shots.

Charlie Niebuhr, Kyle Proctor, and John Sramac scored two goals each for Ithaca. Jace Dockx scooped up four groundballs to pair with two caused turnovers.

Wooster had 16 possession miscues to 25 for Ithaca. That helped Wooster to a 36-23 advantage in groundballs.
