WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster scored once early
and once late during the second half for a 2-1 comeback victory
over previously undefeated John Carroll University late Saturday
afternoon in non-league men's soccer action at Carl Dale
Memorial Field.
John Carroll (3-1) had controlled the majority of the first-half
action, including a goal in the 27th minute, but the momentum
turned at the onset of the second. Wooster (2-3-1) kept possession
on its offensive end for the first few minutes and then took
advantage of an opportunity, when the Blue Steak defense was unable
to control the ball at the top of the goal box. The Fighting
Scots' Karl Ruter poked it away over to a charging Nate
Florian, who quickly finished the play with his first career
goal.
Wooster's high-energy level continued, especially following a
save by Taylor Takacs off a John Carroll breakaway attempt less
than two minutes after the tying score. It remained 1-1 until the
Scots earned a corner kick during the 83rd minute. The corner began
with Brenton Allen driving the ball to the far left post, where
Chris Chapman won a header, passing it over to a wide open Davis
Bates, positioned in the upper right corner of the box. Bates took
his time, calmly blasting the shot into the upper right for what
turned out to be the game-winner.
The Blue Streaks nearly sent the match into overtime with a couple
of late runs. Their best chance came when Joe Ciacchi centered a
ball to a charging Scott McKinney right in front of the Wooster
goal, but McKinney's hurried shot went over the crossbar with
just under 2:00 to go.
John Carroll's lone goal came courtesy of Louis Kastelic.
After chasing down a ball on the right side and brining it into the
box, he beat Takacs to the lower left of the net.
That was Takacs only blemish of the day, as he played all 90
minutes for the first time in his career and came up with five
saves, while the Blue Streaks' Matt DeMarchi was credited
with one.
The Scots are next in action Wednesday at Muskingum College
(1-5).
