The College of Wooster men's soccer team overwhelmed
Defiance College Saturday afternoon, cruising past the Yellow
Jackets by a count of 4-0 in non-conference action at Carl Dale
Memorial Field.
Wooster (1-2-1) received an early lift from Karl Ruter, as the
junior midfielder was part of two goals within the opening 20
minutes. First, in the 17th minute, he sent a free kick into the
box where Brian Holmes directed it into the net, marking the
sophomore forward's first career goal. Just 1:37 later, Ruter
scored himself after receiving a low crossing pass from junior
forward Scott Buckwald.
The host Fighting Scots would make it 3-0 right before halftime, as
junior forward Davis Bates headed in a cross from classmate Chase
Beach. Defiance (0-3) was held without a shot in the first
half.
It was more of the same in the second, as Wooster ended up with a
23-4 shot advantage for the game. One of its 12 attempts that half
also was on target, as Buckwald ran down a long pass from the
backfield and turned it into a breakaway goal during the 88th
minute.
With their one-goal, one-assist outings on Saturday, both Buckwald
and Ruter have seven points for the season.
Goalies Taylor Takacs and Jordan O'Boyle combined for the
shutout, with O'Boyle making two saves in the second half.
Their counterpart, Mitch Livensparger, was credited with eight
stops.
Next, the Scots are in action Wednesday at Otterbein College (1-1)
at 4 p.m.
