Last Second Goal Propels Wooster Over Allegheny 2-1

WOOSTER, Ohio – In its last home match of the season, The College of Wooster men's soccer team scored a dramatic game-winning goal with 15 seconds remaining on the clock to edge North Coast Athletic Conference challenger Allegheny College 2-1 on Wednesday at Carl Dale Field.

The Fighting Scots (4-9-2, 1-6-1 NCAC) and the Gators (7-8-1, 2-5-1 NCAC) both went 73 minutes without scoring a goal, but each squad got on the scoreboard late to knot the match at 1-1 with overtime looming. In a last second attempt to score in regulation, Yousef Aliakbar was fouled while sprinting through several defenders on his way to the goal, and Wooster was awarded a free kick. Karl Ruter then blasted the ensuing shot around a wall of defenders and past the goalkeeper's outstretched arms into the right corner of the goal to score the victory.

The action initially picked up at the 72:57 mark when Davis Bates beat the keeper on a deep shot that put Wooster ahead 1-0. Then ten minutes later, Allegheny answered back when Ryan Fetterolf delivered a well-placed corner kick and Chris Brennan headed in the game-tying goal.

The Gators outshot Wooster 9-5 in the match, including 4-0 in the opening 15 minutes of play, until Justin Younker blasted a shot just over the goal that energized the Scots attack. Wooster almost snuck in a score seconds before the break when it was awarded a corner kick and Adam Will bent a shot that hit crossbar and ricochet down into the goalkeeper's hands.

The Scots will wrap up their season this Saturday when they travel to Denison University (9-4, 5-1 NCAC) to battle the Big Red at 1 p.m.
