Youthful Scots Stay Close With No. 22 Carleton

After seeing its anticipated season opener at Elmhurst College cancelled on Friday night due to lightning, The College of Wooster men's soccer team officially opened 2013 with a challenge as No. 22 Carleton College held off the Fighting Scots 1-0 on Saturday afternoon, also at Elmhurst, Ill.

Wooster (0-1), with four freshmen starters, played its nationally-ranked foe to a draw throughout the opening half, with the Scots owning a slight edge in shot attempts, 3-2.

Carleton (1-0) struck early in the second. Shortly after a corner kick, Neil Bartholomay took a blast amongst the traffic in front of the goal that found the back of the net 1:33 into the half's action for what turned out to be the game's lone score.

The youthful Wooster team put six newcomers on the field out of the 19 who played, and one was first-year Matt Parmelee, who attempted a team-high two shots, including one off of a corner in the 88th minute that was saved by the Knights 'keeper to preserve the shutout.

Defensively for the Scots, senior Matthew Canter was back in goal and recorded two saves.

Wooster returns to Ohio and will play at Muskingum University (0-1) on Wednesday.
