The College of Wooster attempted four shots during the final 10 minutes, but could not come up with the equalizer as Muskingum University pulled out a 2-1 non-conference triumph in men's soccer action Wednesday night at New Concord, Ohio.
Wooster (0-2) was down 2-0 at halftime, but scored early in the second and continued to pressure Muskingum (1-0) down the stretch. The Fighting Scots' goal came courtesy of Aleksi Pelkonen as the freshman emerged with a loose ball in front of the net, following a corner kick sent in by CJ Polak, and kicked it in for his first collegiate goal during the 58th minute.
The score remained 2-1, despite Wooster's final push, which included attempts by Matthew Kelly, Philip Charnley, Matt Parmelee, and Polak.
Statistically, it was a pretty even game with the Muskies holding a slight edge in shots (21-17). The Scots' goalkeeper, Matthew Canter, registered six saves on the evening.
Wooster will be at Heidelberg University (0-0) Friday for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
