Skelly Lifts Wooster to Win With Just :03 Left in First OT

George Skelly

WOOSTER, Ohio – George Skelly scored with just :03 remaining in the first overtime to provide The College of Wooster a thrilling 1-0 victory against Marietta College during men's soccer action Tuesday night at John P. Papp Stadium.

It marked the second dramatic goal for Wooster (2-4-1) in a matter of days, as Sheamus Dalton netted one with 2:18 left in regulation that ultimately resulted in a 1-1 tie with Capital University on Saturday night.

Skelly may have one-upped Dalton, though. With Tuesday's match seemingly headed to a second extra session, defender Patrick Pickering delivered a pass into the center of the box that Matt Ehrenburg controlled with his left foot, then he one-touched it on goal, where Bobby Thaxton of Marietta (3-5) made an initial save. Skelly quickly gathered the rebound with his back to the right post, spun and took a sliding shot with his left foot, chipping the ball over the 'keeper for the game-winner.

While it took nearly 100 minutes for a decision in this match, the Fighting Scots dominated possession through much of it. Overall, Wooster fired 22 shots to the Pioneers' six.

The Scots' best scoring chance before the game-winner came midway through the second half. On one of their four corner kicks of the evening, CJ Polak served it in, with both Aleksi Pelkonen and Skelly getting off shots near the left post, one actually hitting the post.

Marietta nearly won the game late in regulation, as Wesley Riley fired a long shot on target, forcing Aaron McKee to dive and deflect it over the net to preserve the tie. It marked the only save for Wooster, which continued to use Matthew Canter in goal for the first half and McKee for the remainder of the game.

The Scots open up North Coast Athletic Conference play at No. 2 ranked Ohio Wesleyan University (9-0) on Saturday night.
