The College of Wooster played Marietta College closely for most of the afternoon, as it trailed by just a 1-0 count late in the second half, but the Pioneers broke through for two more tallies to upend the Fighting Scots 3-0 on Sunday at Marietta, Ohio.

Marietta (2-0) took the lead with a breakaway score in the 17th minute, but Wooster's (1-1) defense settled in after that. The Scots had two solid looks on goal late in the first period, with Lucas Hunt's shot attempt sailing high and a header by Zachary Mastrich being corralled by the goalkeeper.

Another near-miss came midway through the second half, when CJ Polak sent a well-placed corner kick into the goal box, but Mouhamet Ndiaye's header went wide.

Marietta eventually pulled away down the stretch, scoring twice over a 6:39 spurt that was too much for Wooster to overcome.

Zach Jergan, making the first start of his career in goal, recorded two saves.

Next up will be Wooster's home opener against Bluffton University (0-1) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
