Wooster, Transylvania Battle to Scoreless Draw in Season Opener

Wooster defender Matthew Kelly wins a header during Tuesday's season opener.

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster nearly doubled Transylvania University in shot attempts, including a couple of high-quality looks during the second half, but the Fighting Scots settled for a 0-0 tie in their 2015 lid-lifter, played under hot and humid conditions on Andrew Turf Field at John P. Papp Stadium on Tuesday.

Wooster (0-0-1) finished with a 16-9 advantage in the shot department and had the two most memorable of the contest, both off the foot of freshman Andrew Klein. In the 68th minute, Lucas Hunt, positioned on the left side, sent a well-placed pass into the box right to the feet of Kelin, however, Transylvania goalkeeper Cody Waltrip read the play correctly and was there to cover the ball for one of his eight saves.

During the 71st minute, Klein drove a rocket from about 25 yards out, forcing Waltrip into a diving stop to keep it scoreless.

As the game advanced into the late stages of regulation, both defenses held strong, with freshman Austin Russell of the Scots recording the lone shot of the last 10 minutes.

The two 10-minue overtime sessions played out similarly. Wooster's Zachary Mastrich put one attempt on goal, but it was easily saved by Waltrip, while the Scots had to fend off back-to-back corner kicks in the 107th minute to preserve the tie.

Matching Waltrip's clean sheet was Wooster goalie Daniel Quinn, who was credited with three saves. Bob Beall, Sheamus Dalton, Hunt, Matthew Kelly, Alex Montalbano, and Arthur Williams were among the key defenders who limited the Pioneers' scoring chances.

This weekend, the Scots will be in Defiance, Ohio, for games against Defiance College (0-1) on Friday and Saint Vincent College (0-1) Saturday.
