Wooster Falls in Overtime to Marietta

 Marco Sapien

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 setback in overtime to visiting Marietta College on a rainy Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.

The Pioneers' (2-2) Andy Rolfes deflected in a free kick from 40 yards out by Kyle Rosselot with 2:03 remaining in the extra session.

Wooster (1-3-1) appeared to have scored the game-winner with 6:24 remaining in regulation, but the Fighting Scots were ruled offside.

Marietta scored first in the 69th minute. Rolfes set his offense up on the break and was fouled in the box, then Taylor Reasoner slid his penalty shot past the outstretched arms of Wooster goalkeeper Scot Stacho.

The Scots responded back less than three minutes later when Marco Sapien buried the equalizer, rifling his shot off of the arm of the Pioneers' goalie. The play was set up on a feed from Ben Deering.

Stacho recorded seven saves on the afternoon, including three in overtime. He had a couple of key saves in the first half to keep Marietta off the board.

Reasoner nearly gave the Pioneers a lead in the 23rd minute, clanging his shot attempt off of the bottom of the crossbar.

Marietta held an 18-7 shot advantage for the match.

Wooster remains at home to take on Carnegie Mellon University (3-1) in a 4 p.m. tilt on Sunday, Sept. 13.
