Fighting Scots Push Strong Tartan Team Before Succumbing 2-0

Wooster's Kieffer Hessler left one Carnegie Mellon player in his dust en route to a shot attempt during Sunday's second-half action.

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster played a strong Carnegie Mellon University squad tough, especially on the defensive half, but the Tartans ultimately prevailed 2-0 in a non-conference men's soccer tilt late Sunday afternoon on Andrew Turf Field at John P. Papp Stadium.

Carnegie Mellon (4-1) had beaten No. 3 ranked Messiah College 4-3 and lost to No. 9 Kenyon College by the same score in its previous two matches. Wooster (1-4-1), on the other hand, is trying to find its footing under a new coach, yet the Fighting Scots were able to keep it close for all 90 minutes, even after yielding an early goal to the Tartans.

A misplay in the third minute allowed Carnegie Mellon to go ahead 1-0, then the Scots had two openings to tie it during the first half. A well-placed cross to a sliding Zachary Mastrich in the 26th minute went just wide, and in the 40th minute, Patrick Pickering got past one defender in the box, and as another defender converged, he took a shot that also went wide.

The Tartans' Tristan Lockwood accounted for the lone score of the second half via an outstanding individual play as his shot hooked around the defense and into the upper right corner of the goal during the 62nd minute.

Overall, Wooster's defense held Carnegie Mellon to 15 shots and five corner kicks, compared to four and two for the Scots, respectively.

Next, Wooster will be at Bluffton University (0-3) on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
