WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's soccer team closed its non-conference season under the lights of John P. Papp Stadium against a strong squad from Case Western Reserve University, and the regionally-ranked Spartans emerged with a 2-0 decision in a competitive match-up on Wednesday night.
Case Western Reserve (7-1), No. 5 in the latest NCAA Div. III Great Lakes Region coaches' poll, took an early lead when Michael Balog tracked down a long pass over the defense, settled the ball, and then beat the 'keeper during a one-on-one opportunity in the 13th minute.
Wooster (2-6-1) had one offensive flurry during the first half, attempting two shots – one of the foot of John McCall and one by Aleksi Pelkonen – and earning a corner kick, all within a minute.
The Fighting Scots remained within 1-0 until the 70th minute. Then, Chris Cvecko headed in a ball off a well-placed free kick from Zach Broujos about 40 yards away.
McCall, a sophomore playing just his second game of the year due to injury, nearly made it 2-1, but his shot in the 87th minutes was inches over the crossbar.
In goal for Wooster, Daniel Quinn was solid as he matched a career high with seven saves against the Spartans' high-pressure attack.
The Scots will look to get North Coast Athletic Conference play off to a good start on Saturday night at Hiram College (4-2-2, 0-0-0 NCAC).
