Fighting Scots’ Second-Half Lead Against No. 9 Ranked Lords Doesn’t Hold Up

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's soccer team led No. 9 ranked Kenyon College for more than 10 minutes of Saturday's second-half action, but the Fighting Scots could not spring the upset as the Lords put together a three-goal flurry midway through the half and tacked on three more during the last 10 minutes for a 6-1 North Coast Athletic Conference decision at John P. Papp Stadium.

Wooster (2-9-1, 0-3-0 NCAC) went toe-to-toe with Kenyon (9-1, 2-1 NCAC), which had been the No. 1 team in all of NCAA Div. III before losing in overtime last Saturday, throughout the first half. Possession was split just about 50-50, and while the Lords held a 5-3 edge in shots, the Fighting Scots had the best scoring chance when John McCall got free for a point-blank attempt during the 36th minute.

The momentum really swung Wooster's way early in the second half. Midfielder Marco Sapien sent a through ball to Austin Russell on the right, and the freshman forward made a quick turn, took a couple dribbles towards the goal, and beat Kenyon's 'keeper with a low shot inside the far post to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. It was the biggest of Russell's team-leading four scores this season.

Marco Sapien delivered an assist during the 49th minute to help Wooster to a 1-0 lead.

The Scots were still ahead during the 60th minute when they were whistled for a foul just outside their own box. Wooster goalie Daniel Quinn stood his ground to make a nice save on Oliver Wynn's free kick, however, Tony Amolo came sprinting in and headed the ensuing loose ball into the net to tie the match.

Less than three minutes later, the Lords took the lead on Josh Lee's left-to-right cross to an unmarked Dalton Eudy, who finished the scoring chance from point-blank range.

Kenyon's offensive firepower was on display again in the 64th minute, as Alberto Carmona ripped a shot from about 25 yards out that found its mark, and suddenly it was a 3-1 game.

The Scots stayed close until the final moments when the Lords put together a second three-goal flurry.

Next, Wooster's challenging early half of the league schedule continues as it will be at regionally-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University (9-2-2, 2-0-1 NCAC).
