Wooster Battles No. 19 DePauw to 2-2 Draw

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's soccer team put forth one of its best performances of the season on "Senior Day," ending with a 2-2 draw against No. 19 ranked and North Coast Athletic Conference leader DePauw University Saturday afternoon at a brisk John P. Papp Stadium.

Austin Russell gave Wooster (2-10-2, 0-4-1 NCAC) a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute. Sheamus Dalton played a free kick into the box which was headed down by Alex Montalbano enabling the first-year to knock in his team-leading fifth goal of the year.

The Fighting Scots struck again just over three minutes later, as they took advantage of a turnover with Kieffer Hessler dribbling in and sliding his shot past the goalie, who was playing up in the box.

DePauw (9-1-3, 4-0-1 NCAC) halved the lead in the 57th minute when Adrian Ables buried a penalty kick into the lower left corner.

Gabriel Lopez and the rest of Wooster's seniors celebrated their last Saturday home game with a tie against nationally-ranked DePauw.

EJ Moore netted the equalizer during the 69th minute. A free kick by the Tigers sailed wide, but was prevented from going out-of-bounds by Zach Hoffman, who then was able to feed the ball to Moore.

Wooster survived a big scare in the 89th minute when Hoffman obtained possession deep on the Scots' half of the field. The junior sailed his ensuing shot attempt high.

DePauw had the better chances during the first extra session with four shots and two corner kicks. Wooster's lone shot came in the 98th minute, but Hessler had his attempt blocked.

Neither team had a high-quality scoring opportunity in the second overtime.

DePauw finished with a 27-8 shot advantage, but Daniel Quinn was up to the task with 11 saves.

The Scots return to the road for a 7 p.m. tilt at Denison University (9-1-2, 1-1-2 NCAC) on Tuesday.
