Heartbreaker for Scots in Last Game of Season as Wittenberg Tops Wooster 2-1

 Kieffer Hessler

Wittenberg University's Austin Lewis scored with three seconds remaining as The College of Wooster men's soccer team had a heartbreaking 2-1 setback in its final contest of the season.

Wooster (3-13-2, 1-7-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) had momentum coming into the match after a 3-2 win over Allegheny College on Wednesday. The energy from the win carried over at the onset as the Fighting Scots recorded the first three shot attempts of the game, all of which came within the first 6:05.

Kieffer Hessler broke through in the 32nd minute to hand Wooster a 1-0 lead. The junior pushed in his third goal of the year to move into sole possession of second place on the team. It also marked the second straight game with a goal scored for Hessler. First-year Austin Russell, the College's leading scorer, was on the distributing end this time for his second collegiate assist.

Wittenberg's 4-12-3, 1-7-1 NCAC) Nick Gutlove netted the equalizer in the 75th minute on a play set up by Lewis, the match's hero.

Wittenberg controlled the tempo after its first goal with Wooster only able to fire off two shot attempts down the stretch. The Tigers peppered the Scots with four shots, including the match-winner, over the final three minutes.

Wittenberg narrowly out-shot Wooster 25-21 in a highly offensive match, as it was just the third time the College was over 20 shot attempts this season in a game.

Scot Stacho finished with eight saves.

Wooster could have a very experience core next year as the Scots are projected to have eight players return who started in nine or more contests this year.
