Scots Tie Transylvania in Nail-biter at Lexington

Max Rochester
Will Collis

An action-packed end to regulation and overtime offered glimpses of a potential victory for The College of Wooster's men's soccer team, but opportunities failed to materialize as the Scots came out with a well-earned 0-0 draw against Transylvania on Sunday afternoon at Lexington, Ky.

In the 88th minute, Wooster (1-0-1) nearly sealed the win as freshman Benjamin Freije connected on a header in the opponent's box, only to be denied by the post as the rebound shot attempt from sophomore Andrew Klein sailed high.

A last-second Wooster corner in the 90th minute presented sophomore Ousmane Sy with a shot opportunity, only to be blocked by a defenseman as the regulation whistle blew.

With both sides goalless after the end of regulation, Transylvania (1-0-1) came out clicking offensively, outshooting Wooster 3-1 in the first overtime period as the Scots' defense held on to force another 10 minutes of extra time.

The action continued into the dying seconds of the game as Wooster freshman Max Rochester fired a shot off the post in the 106th. Four minutes later, Transylvania's Charlie Wend sent what intended to be a cross towards the back post, as the ball drifted over the head of Wooster goalkeeper Will Collis, hitting the far post and deflecting towards the penalty marker. Collis would rush for the ball and successfully recover it.

The game ended goalless but not without suspense as the Scots recorded 17 total shots.

Collis made his first start of the season in goal, logging five saves including two in double overtime.

Transylvania tallied 21 shots and nine corner kicks, along with 12 fouls.

Wooster next plays at the University of Mount Union on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
