Scots Showcase Offensive Firepower, Defeat Olivet 3-0 in First Match of Invitational

Max Rochester
Aleksi Pelkonen

Three goals in a nine-minute span proved to be the difference for The College of Wooster men's soccer team as the Scots defeated Olivet College 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Adidas-Fred Myers Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.

Despite 13 shots in the first half from Wooster (2-1-1), including five on target, the opening 45 minutes ended as they started – goalless.

The score line finally tilted in the Scots' favor in the 65th minute after first-year Max Rochester played a ball ahead to senior Aleksi Pelkonen, who struck it from the top of the box and past Olivet goalkeeper Nathan Weeks to open the scoring column.

Just eight minutes later, a foul in the box on Olivet (0-4-0) gifted a penalty kick opportunity to Wooster. Rochester stepped up and buried it home, doubling the Scots' advantage at 2-0.

Rochester would not be contained, however, as a ball from teammate Alex Montalbano found Rochester on the left flank, who cut in from the outside for a strike near the top of the 18-yard box, blasting it by the 'keeper for the brace and the Scots' third and final goal of the game.

Wooster registered 26 shots total in the game. Olivet tallied seven shots and eight saves.

The Scots face Washington and Lee University on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 11 a.m. for their final match as part of the Adidas-Fred Myers Invitational.
