Ndiaye Wonder Strike Not Enough as Earlham Takes Down Wooster 2-1

WOOSTER, Ohio – A stunning goal from The College of Wooster junior Mouhamet Ndiaye gave the Fighting Scots an early lead, but a stout Earlham College defense held on as the offense converted on two second-half opportunities to defeat Wooster 2-1 at Carl Dale Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Scots (2-4-1) brought the offensive intensity early, eager to strike with consistent through-balls over the Quakers' backline as they looked for a well-timed combination.

After a scoreless opening 32 minutes, Ndiaye provided the spark the Scots were looking for.

Junior Mouhamet Ndiaye tallied his first goal of the season on Saturday afternoon.

First-year Manny Burton found Ndiaye open on the left flank. With a should-fake down the line, Ndiaye cut in towards the box, placing a perfectly-weighted curler into the goal's far corner in the 33rd minute.

The score remained 1-0 as the halftime whistle blew.

The Quakers (3-3-0) struck a bit of fortune in the 65th minute when a 40-yard free kick from Ismail Lapp-Kamara – aimed for the center of the box – bounced untouched in the six-yard-box and over Wooster 'keeper Scot Stacho as defenders were unable to clear the ball before crossing the goal line.

In the 82nd minute, Earlham tallied the game-winning goal as Bronwen Evans dribbled between a pair of Wooster defenders from outside the 18-yard-box before sliding a shot under the diving body of Stacho to give the Quakers a 2-1 edge.

The Scots were shown a glimmer of light, however, after a foul on Earlham in its own box granted Wooster a penalty kick in the 87th minute. Sophomore Austin Russell stepped up, lifting it just high of the frame as the Quakers held on for a 2-1 win.

Wooster managed seven shots on the game, compared to nine from Earlham.

Stacho finished with four saves on the match.

The Scots are back in action on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. as they get set to host Capital University (5-1-0) before opening North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday against Hiram College (2-2-1) at 3:30 p.m at Carl Dale Field.
