Wooster Falls 4-0 to No. 25 Oberlin

Andrew Klein

The College of Wooster men's soccer team conceded a pair of goals in each half en route to a 4-0 shutout at No. 25 Oberlin College on Saturday evening.

The Fighting Scots (4-6-1, 1-1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference) entered the game riding a two-match win streak, while outscoring their opponents 6-0 in the process.

Oberlin (8-1-1, 2-0-0 NCAC) took the go-ahead goal on its first shot of the evening, as Nick Wertman placed it in the top-left corner off the set-up pass from Trenton Bulucea to take a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.

In the 18th minute, a low cross over the penalty area from Adam Chazin-Gray found the feet of Timothy Williams, who finished it low and to the right to double the Yeomen's lead.

Wooster sophomore Andrew Klein threatened to cut the deficit in the closing minutes of the first half after connecting on a shot, but the Oberlin defense closed the gap quickly, blocking Klein's attempt as it deflected out of bounds.

The Scots managed four shots in the first half, compared to 10 from Oberlin.

Insurance tallies arrived for the Yeomen nearly midway through the second half, as two goals in less than one minute put the cap on the night's scoring.

Wertman tallied his second of the game in the 60th minute after capitalizing on a rebound from an attempted Wooster defensive clearance.

Just 59 seconds later, a shot from Williams hit the post and deflected into the center of the Scots' 18-yard-box. Bulucea pounced on the rebound opportunity to secure Oberlin's fourth goal of the game and second within a one-minute span.

The Yeomen outshot Wooster 19-8, while taking a 7-1 edge in corner kicks on the day.

Junior goalkeeper Scot Stacho finished with four saves.

Wooster returns to action on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. showdown at second-ranked Kenyon College (8-2-0, 1-1-0 NCAC).

A late second-half tally from senior Kennedy Payne salvaged a result for The College of Wooster women's soccer team, as they rallied to tie Oberlin College 1-1 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon and stay unbeaten in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

For nearly all of regulation, the Fighting Scots (4-6-1, 1-0-1 NCAC) played down a goal as Oberlin's Gwennie Gardiner put away a one-touch finish from close range off the pass from Hannah Cook to take a 1-0 lead in the 3rd minute.

Wooster reestablished their defensive presence, however, as the Scots conceded only four shots for the remainder of the half.

In search for the equalizer, Wooster came out of the halftime break with a high-pressure mind set, tallying eight shots in the second period.

The breakthrough came in the 87th minute, as a breakaway finish from Payne brought the Scots level to force overtime.

In regulation, the Scots outshot Oberlin (5-3-1, 0-1-1 NCAC) 14-10, while earning a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Both squads battled for possession throughout the first overtime period, and no major scoring chances materialized for either team.

Senior goalkeeper Carly Eppler came through in a big way to start the final overtime period, as she recorded two saves in the game's closing ten minutes to preserve the tie and come away with a hard-earned point on the road.

With the goal, Payne becomes the sixth Wooster player to record at least two goals on the season, while the senior forward continues to lead the team in assists with three.

The Scots return to action on Saturday, Oct. 8, as they travel to Kenyon College (4-5-1, 2-0-0 NCAC) for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
