Russell Equalizes Late as Scots Draw Rival Wittenberg 1-1 in Season Finale

WOOSTER, Ohio – After a well-timed through ball from senior Kieffer Hessler, sophomore Austin Russell provided the offensive highlight of the day with a low-struck equalizer in the 75th minute as The College of Wooster drew Wittenberg University 1-1 in double overtime in the final contest of the season on Saturday afternoon at Carl Dale Field.

After a scoreless first half in which the Tigers (3-13-1, 0-8-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) outshot the Fighting Scots (4-12-2, 1-7-1 NCAC), Wittenberg drew first blood as Matt Bayler finished from close range in the 50th minute.

Senior Kieffer Hessler dribbles through the Wittenberg backline in Wooster's 1-1 double overtime draw. The senior provided the assist on sophomore Austin Russell's game-tying goal.

Wooster goalkeeper Scot Stacho did well to deny an initial attempt from Samuel Archinal, but the save rebounded straight to Bayler, who put it away to give Witt a one-goal advantage with less than 40 minutes remaining.

Just two minutes later, Hessler displayed some good change of pace qualities after dribbling through Wittenberg's midfield and defense on a solo run, only to be undone by an outside-of-the-foot shot that curled just wide.

Senior defender Matthew Kelly connected on a header off a corner from fellow classmate Aleksi Pelkonen shortly after in the 54th minute, but 'keeper Spencer Pritchett did well to manage the save.

In the 62nd minute, senior Zachary Mastrich found himself with an uncontested left-footed shot from the top of the box, but the captain lifted it over the crossbar and out of play.

After receiving the ball in the midfield, Hessler did well to play into space in the 75th minute, as Russell won the 50-50 battle to the ball before striking it low and across his body for his team-high fourth goal of the season.

The sophomore attacking midfielder nearly provided a glimpse of magic with a shot on target in the dying seconds of regulation, but goalkeeper Jack Snider, who subbed in mid-way through the second half, denied the opportunity.

After a scoreless first period, the Scots appeared ready for a break-through in the second ten-minute period of overtime, as they outshot Witt 6-1 in the period and 7-2 throughout all of overtime.

Kelly again came in with a strong header opportunity in the box, but Snider got a hand to it before it sailed out for a Wooster corner.

Off the resulting corner, sophomore Alex Montalbano chimed in with another header attempt which again found the hands of Snider, who finished overtime with three saves, all coming in the second period.

Stacho finished with four saves while Wooster outshot the Tigers 21-12 on the day. The Scots earned the corner kick advantage 12-9.
