Late Penalty Gives Grove City Win over Scots in Road Opener

Will Collis

An 82nd-minute penalty kick goal led Grove City College to a 1-0 victory over The College of Wooster men's soccer team on Friday evening as part of the Fighting Scot's first road game of the 2017 campaign.

In an otherwise even-slated offensive bout, Grove City's (2-0-1) Jonathan Burton converted the game-winning penalty kick with less than nine minutes left to play.

Wooster (2-2) out-shot Grove City, 14-8, including 3-2 in shots on goal. Four Scots – junior Austin Russell, sophomores Max Rochester and Paulo Nunes, and first-year Max Hill – each recorded two shots.

Sophomore goalkeeper Will Collis recorded the loss, his second of the season. With a .875 save percentage, Collis' goals-against average remains at sub-1.00 (0.74) through four matches while the Scots head into tomorrow's showdown against the University of Pitt.-Bradford (0-4) averaging one goal per match.

Tomorrow's road match is slated for 3 p.m. After a 1-0 loss to Allegheny College (2-1) on Friday, the Panthers enter Saturday winless through four matches. Allegheny managed 27 shots against Pitt.-Bradford, with 14 coming on frame en route to a 1-0 victory.
