Scots Open Season With Strong Showings at Kenyon Invite

Jack Buchan and Davis Elkins got their College of Wooster tennis careers off to a strong start, as the freshmen won the "C Doubles" championship at the Kenyon College Invitational, highlighting the Fighting Scots' 2013-14 debut this Saturday and Sunday in Gambier, Ohio.

The Buchan-Elkins pairing prevailed 8-6 in all three of their matches en route to first-place, edging teams from Walsh University and two different Oberlin College opponents. Also for Wooster at "C Doubles," senior Nick Biniker and junior Tripp McLane finished in fifth, and junior Sam Huffman and sophomore Avery Rapson were seventh.

Headlining the Scots' singles results, senior Zack Rotter won his first-round match at "C," prevailing 6-3, 6-1 over his opponent from Juniata College before falling in the quarterfinals. Buchan also picked up an individual victory, a 6-2, 6-4 decision against an Oberlin foe during the first round at "D Singles," while senior John Schulz was a winner in that back draw, 7-6, 6-4.

Wooster combined for six victories at "E Singles," including Elkins, who advanced to the semifinals there with 6-3, 6-0 and 8-6 triumphs.

Wooster opens its traditional dual-match play on Wednesday when Malone University (0-1) visits for a 4:30 p.m. match-up.
