The College of Wooster's men's tennis team kicked off the spring portion of its schedule on Saturday in a tri-match at Crawfordsville, Ind., and its results were mixed, as it pushed host Wabash College to the brink in a 5-4 setback and later fell by an 8-1 margin against Elmhurst College.

The Fighting Scots (1-3) showed significant improvement in their narrow loss to Wabash, as just last year they were defeated 8-1 by the Little Giants.

Wooster's depth was on display as it took its singles matches at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6, with the latter match providing the most dominant result, as Paul Thomas cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win. Jacob Pine was a winner in a back-and-forth match at No. 4 by scores of 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6), while No. 5 Jack Buchan triumphed by a tally of 5-7, 6-4, 10-4.

Also victorious were Milo Saurman and Willy Nelson at No. 2 doubles (8-5).

Harrison Suttle was strong in the first set of his No. 1 singles match, but eventually dropped the closely-contested battle 7-5, 6-1.

Against Elmhurst, Thomas became a double-winner on the day with another win at No. 6 (6-3, 4-6, 10-4), while Saurman was very competitive in a 6-3, 7-5 setback at the third spot and in a No. 1 doubles loss with Nelson (9-7).

Wooster will be back in action Feb. 28 against northeast Ohio foe John Carroll University.
