In its North Coast Athletic Conference East Division opener, The College of Wooster men's tennis team came up on the short end of a series of tightly-contested matches, ultimately suffering an 8-1 setback to Oberlin College on Sunday in a contest that was moved to Towpath Racquet Club at Akron, Ohio.
Wooster (6-5, 0-1 NCAC East), without the services of one its top players, was within striking distance of scoring a couple of points in doubles. Willy Nelson was playing with a new partner in John Schulz, and the duo went the distance with Oberlin's (10-8, 1-0 NCAC East) top team as they were tied 8-8 before falling in the decisive tiebreaker, 7-5. Jack Buchan and Davis Elkins also were very close to tallying a team point at No. 3 doubles, only to take an 8-6 loss.
Landon Moore provided the Fighting Scots a lift in singles, winning a lengthy third-set super tiebreaker, 13-11, after splitting the first two sets 3-6 and 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Nelson dropped a tough tiebreaker for the second time in the match at No. 1, which ended in a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) score line. At No. 4 singles, Wooster's Jacob Pine took the first set, but not the second or third in a match with 6-1 scores in all three sets. Also notable, Harrison Suttle pushed his No. 2 singles foe to 6-4 in each set.
The Scots return to action on Friday at Franciscan University (3-7).
