The College of Wooster men's tennis team closed out its 2013-14 campaign with an 8-1 victory at Heidelberg University on Wednesday, improving to 10-9 overall and thus clinching the program's first winning season since 2009.

The 10 victories under first-year head coach Tim Dunford also marked a five-win improvement over last season (5-14).

Wooster put forth a dominating display in its season finale, starting by taking two of the three doubles matches 8-0 and 8-1, the shutout courtesy of the Willy Nelson-John Schulz team at No. 2 and the Jack Buchan-Davis Elkins duo yielding a single game at No. 3. Buchan and Elkins, both freshmen, were a key to the Fighting Scots' success all year, posting a 12-5 record at the third position.

In singles action, Wooster swept through the entire lineup without giving up a set. Nelson cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 decision in the top spot, and winning by similarly decisive score lines were Landon Moore, Paul Thomas, and Erik Lindberg at No. 3 (6-2, 6-0), No. 5 (6-1, 6-3), and No. 6 (6-0, 6-0), respectively. After blanking his opponent in the first set, Jacob Pine was extended to a tiebreaker at the second position (6-0, 7-6), as was Schulz, who emerged as the victor at No. 4 (6-2, 7-6).

This marked the final match for Moore, Schulz, and Thomas. Of the seniors, Thomas played the most over the last four years, compiling a solid career record of 35-38 in singles.
