The College of Wooster set the tone for the upcoming season with a solid victory in its home opener Friday, as the Fighting Scots swept doubles and added three more wins at singles on their way to a 6-3 triumph over University of Mount Union at the D.J. Hard Memorial Courts.

Playing their first traditional dual match with first-year head coach Zachary Hasenyager at the helm, the Scots (1-0) got out to an early 3-0 lead in doubles, even with all three Wooster pairings being brand new ones.

At No. 1 doubles we saw newcomer Titas Bera team with junior Harrison Suttle for an 8-6 win, while senior Jacob Pine and sophomore Jack Buchan got past their opponents 9-7 at No. 2, and senior Willy Nelson and freshman Vilius Sulnis came out on top at the third spot by an 8-3 count.

First-years Bera and Sulnis kept it rolling in singles action, highlighted by an outstanding performance from Bera, who debuted at No. 1 singles and won decisively (6-1, 6-0). Sulnis saw much more resistance at the sixth-spot and worked hard to secure a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) victory.

Finally, Pine joined the first-years as a double-winner with a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 3 singles.

The Scots could have taken down Mount Union ever more convincingly, but Suttle and Buchan were both edged out in third-set super tiebreakers at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively.

Wooster will be back on the courts this weekend at the Oberlin Invitiational.
