The College of Wooster was edged by Ohio Wesleyan University in a tightly-contested match for the second time in eight days, as the Fighting Scots came up on the short end of a 5-3 decision on Saturday, this time at the North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Tournament in Granville, Ohio.
Wooster (10-16), which finishes eighth in the conference standings, had an opportunity to avenge a 5-4 loss to Ohio Wesleyan (9-12) from April 22 and got off to a good start by winning two of the three doubles matches.
After Titas Bera and Harrison Suttle secured an 8-5 triumph at No. 2, Jack Buchan and Davis Elkins closed out their excellent season together at No. 1 by prevailing in a close one, 9-8 (7-5), for their fourth consecutive victory. Buchan and Elkins improved to 12-8 on the year, all at the top flight, which includes three wins against regionally-ranked opponents.
Already ahead 2-1, Suttle put together a quick 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 5 singles in the senior's final career match, and the Scots seemed to be in good shape. However, the Battling Bishops reeled off four-straight victories in singles, capped by a three-setter at No. 6 (1-6, 6-2, 6-0).
In the first round of the NCAC tourney, Wooster drew No. 17 ranked and top-seeded Kenyon College, and though the Scots were competitive, the Lords were too much to overcome in Friday's 5-1 match. Buchan and Elkins scored Wooster's team point via an 8-6 triumph at No. 1 doubles.
While the Scots will miss Suttle, the team's lone senior, the future is promising. Their other starters in 2016 typically consisted of two juniors, a sophomore in Bera, who is No. 25 in the latest singles regional rankings, and two freshmen.
