Third-Set Tiebreaker Clinches 5-4 Match for Walsh over Wooster

 Titas Bera

The College of Wooster men's tennis team warded off a match point in two separate flights before bowing out in a highly competitive 5-4 match to Div. II Walsh University on Sunday afternoon during the Fighting Scots' fall opener at the D.J. Hard Tennis Courts on campus.

Wooster (0-1) opened up a 2-1 lead after doubles when seniors Jack Buchan and Davis Elkins tied the match at one with an 8-6 win out of the first flight. Junior Titas Bera and sophomore Jesse DeWitt backed that up with an identical 8-6 triumph at the No. 2 position.

In singles play, Bera warded off a match point down 4-5 in the second set which sparked an impressive come-from-behind 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win out of the first flight.

In similar fashion to the end of last year's match that was won by Wooster 5-4, Sunday's tilt came down to a third-set tiebreaker, but this time Walsh (1-0) was on the winning end. Elkins trailed 5-6 in the tiebreaker before falling 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) to Walsh's Felix Zimmerman.

Wooster fourth team point came out of the fourth flight where DeWitt rallied back for the 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win.

The Scots were right in the mix at the other three singles flights as Buchan, Nathan Devereux, and Andrew Long all had a set where they won four games during their respective matches.

Wooster is back in action at the Oberlin College Invitational next weekend.
