Buchan, Elkins Make History as Scots Topple Wittenberg 8-1

WOOSTER, Ohio – It was more than just an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles for seniors Jack Buchan and Davis Elkins. In fact, it was the dynamic duo's 41st career victory together, marking a new program record for most career doubles wins originally set by John Morlidge and Bob Savitt during the 1983-84 season, as The College of Wooster men's tennis team claimed an 8-1 victory over Wittenberg University inside the Scot Center on Friday evening.

Buchan and Elkins were the first to finish as part of a doubles sweep for the Fighting Scots (6-11). At No. 2, junior Titas Bera and sophomore Jesse DeWitt took down Wittenberg's (8-4) Martin Mora and Timmy McNulty 8-5 while junior Andrew Long and first-year Nathan Devereux won 8-4 at the No. 3 spot.

Of note, Buchan and Elkins are 14-8 in doubles this season and have already matched their season-best win total set back in 2014 when they finished 14-7 on the year, as the Scots still have eight regular season matches remaining.

Switching to singles, Bera, who came into the match as the 16th-ranked player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's NCAA Div. III Central Region, took his first set, 6-2, against Witt's Mora before dropping the second, 3-6, and the third set tiebreaker, 5-10.

Aside from Bera, each Scot won in straight sets in singles play. Buchan continued to roll as he avenged a 2016 three-set loss to the Tigers' Luke Minard with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2, and in fitting form, clinched the team victory. Three Wooster players won their first sets by a 6-0 count, including Elkins at No. 3 as he went on to claim the second set, 6-2.

DeWitt came through at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-2 win while Devereux (6-0, 6-1) and Long (6-0, 6-1) rounded out the match with convincing wins at the No. 5 and 6 positions, respectively.

Notable, Buchan and Elkins have recorded at least 12 wins together in three of their four seasons.

Up next, the Scots take on regionally-ranked Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (8-5, 1-0 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Fairborn Community Park in Dayton, Ohio.
